Beam me up

If you consider that Star Trek in particular of the SciFi genre showed communicators (mobile phones to us now maybe) hand held computers (which we have really with internet ready phones etc and laptops) and various other things;
Do you think/or will it ever be that wer are able to be beamed up so to speak?

Yes I am bored..... But think about it things we never thought possible are now possible....so maybe

And if not beam me up then what do you think may be the big leap forward....

Re: Beam me up

D'you know, I think theres a chance it will eventually happen. Though not for a very long time. Pity, it would be a great way of getting to Scotland with out traffic jams lol!

I think the next big leap forward will be cars that dont run on petrol at all. What they will run on I dont know, but oil isn't going to last much longer!!

Re: Beam me up

okay I think about this a lot.

the next big leap would be cars that are programmed - you would just plug in your destination and your car would take you there. Then the next step would be to have cars like that flying - an end to cars being on the road.

I would love the beam me up technology imagine it I'm going to go shopping in New York today - beam there

Space exploration is the most exciting for me - I would love to be an astronaut and exploring space and studying new worlds - you never know meeting new life forms

Re: Beam me up

Yes I can see cars becoming plug in/driverless ,aybe not such a great leap from now what with satnav and other gadgets like fingerprint ID to enter the vechicle and start the car.

Maybe next would be a sensor that stopped the car automaticaly or slowed it down when it came within "dnager zone" to a solid object be that another car or person. No more crashes or road deaths - imagine.

But flying very good idea, plug in cars too.

Anything else?

Karen

Re: Beam me up

LOL! what a good question, i believe so yes, for the more 'mature' folk amongst us, can you remember the first color televisions? how amazing was that?! Im using that as an example..

But yeah, i the posibility of 'beaming' is not so far actually, scientists have managed to 'transport' light, as a particle from one place to another using Quanta and Quantum mechanics (google it! ) Science, physics are my favourite things so this is somewhat of interest, the hard part is this;

Think of a person as a one cell organism, we have to split it down, break it up into sub atomic levels (atoms as to speak, electrons and photons etc) move those particles, then rebuild it at the other end EXACTLY how it was taken apart, thats the hard part! lol something to think about for you guys

Eddy x

EDIT :::

Ok another good example, the 1st ever computer had less computing power than the musical cards we see in todays life, it had over 8Km of cables and took the space of the average house! Did we ever think that we would be using a computer, the size of your hand in todays society? Nope, and i guess it was a novel idea 50-60 years ago aswell!! So, just think of it that way, how about the 1st face transplant? or Brain transplant, remember the 1st heart transplant?

Re: Beam me up

Eddy, that's a matter transmitter you're describing... that's what I want! To be able to go into a booth,dial where you want to go and...poof...you're there! Go shopping in London, hop over to Provence for lunch, and be back home to dinner! But not gonna happen in my lifetime! Remember the movie The Fly where the man's genes got mixed up with the fly's? Yuck! I'm long enough in the tooth to remember the Eniac computer, big as a house and had to be air-cooled because of the heat it generated...we have come a long way, baby!

Yep, I remember black and white TV, Walkman (wow that was exciting in it's day...music you could carry with you! !), the first VCR's that no one could program, the first remotes, 8 tracks, and the first mobile phones (must have weighed a pound!), and the first hand held little calculators (I could finally balance my checkbook!)..life is better now!!!
