A home for life - a rescue cats plea

Just reading what Smudgley said about tears in her eyes about her adult rescue cats this poem sprang into my head here it is.

They are looking for a young cat
Everyone seems to be, as they pass me by
I hear them say the words
“It’s a kitten we want you see”

I crawl back into my bed; it’s not my turn today
Is it to much to want a home of my own
To feel again the touch of a soft and caring hand
A person to call me in at night, a place to rest my head.

I’d been in the cold for a long while before
the rescue lady came, I crouched and hissed at her
But she picked me up “come on puss, no fuss now, you’ll be safe with me”
How did she know deep down I wanted to be rescued

This is my story so far
I was a kitten once too; but something went badly wrong
I never found out what I’d done, but it must have been bad
Because soon I was cold and hungry, and left to roam the streets

My fur was getting dirty my paws were no longer clean
No place to rest, no place to hide for an unwanted cat
The streets are hard and unforgiving, life is hard and cruel
When you've grown from kitten to cat

But now I am in this rescue,
Safe and warm and fed
Maybe I am asking a little too much
For a home to be found for me

People again pass me by, I barely raise my head
No one ever stops and looks at me
A middle aged black and white cat
We are hard to rehome you see

But the footsteps have stopped, and slowly I raise my head
Two eyes meet mine and a hand outstretched
“Hello Puss, would you like to come home with me?”
Behind the voice my rescue lady beams "your time has come you see"

So here I am a year on, lying on my windowsill
Warm, fed and watching the world go by,
Safe and certain in the knowledge that
I am loved and home for life you see.

Re: A home for life - a rescue cats plea

Thankyou Kazz ~ that is a lovely poem & it is so true.

"Their day" comes for all of them.
Domino the B & W male in at the moment, is lovely, he was loved & knew only how to curl up by the fire. But now he is with me looking for a new home & he doesn't understand the reasons why, he snuggles under his covers & hides in his bed all the time He loves a cuddle, but you have to "unwrap" him first & find him under his vetbed.
His mate who he lived with has been rehomed, I had to let him go as "his day" came & he had a chance of a home where he would be loved, he was FIV positive & usually those cats "day" just never comes, but it did for Salem & I had no choice but to let him be rehomed, which left Domino on his own.

I have a man coming to see my cats tomorrow - maybe tomorrow will be Dominos day

Thanks Mags - He is the first one I've had who I think is not happy in the pen. Most of them come in & are happy to have a bed & breakfast type of arrangement, with free evening meal. They have heated rooms, with an indoor / outdoor area and an upstairs / downstairs area. They have room service & If they get a cuddle & the odd groom, I don't hear them complain.

But for some reason, I think he just hides away & pretends it's not happening. He eats and drinks and he likes his cuddles, but all the rest of the time he hides away.
