How does x-stitching work then? Is it to a template over which you apply the stitches or is it effectively freehand?

Yola you have a plan of the pattern marked out on paper, with codes for different colours. The material you use (Aida) is just plain with nothing on it at all. Usually you start in the middle (material and plan) as soon as you have your first stitch down you then work from the pattern. The pattern is just loads and loads of little boxes with codes in them. It is quite easy to do and if you get it wrong you just unpick it
