Re: How many is Too many???

Does anyone know the real facts about multiple cat households and the risk of feline leukaemia and feline AIDS? I thought there was a significantly higher risk in multi-cat households but prehaps that's just an old wives' tale?

I don't have facts and figures DM but yes there is supposidly a higher risk with all the diseases in this respect within a multi-cat household, suppose it is obvious really. I have had a multi-cat household for approx 20 years and have never ever had a problem. All my cats are vaccinated including the Leukaemia vaccine for the first few years of their lives and I suppose this helps. I think problems may occur when no cats are vaccinated in the household and one of them comes into contact with something nasty, it could soon spread throught the household??

Maybe Smudgley might have some facts and figures??

Mmm, thanks.
I ask because my sister lost her entire 'flock' of five to leukaemia but that was a good many years ago. Your vaccination policy sounds sensible.

That is really sad DM I once adopted a cat that within a few days became ill. He was diagnosed as suffering with Feline Infectious Peritonitis I had to have the little fellow put to sleep and then panicked that my other 5 cats were going to get ill too. All of them were perfectly fine thank goodness but like I say they all have several years of vaccinations and I didn't have any particularly old or young ones at the time who would obviously have been more vunerable...
