Last time I jumped was 1993 on a peach of a horse. I was only there to make sure he didn't break the sound-barrier on approach, or accidentally jump the corral barrier instead of the obstacles. Are there actually owners who will consent to their charges being lent to beginners, or rusted-to-oblivion-ex-riders? Are they in that case out of their minds?? Stuck at the stage where I'm afraid I'd have enough skills to get us into trouble and not enough to get the horse out unscathed. |

There are indeed people who will loan out their schoolmaster. But good schoolmasters are actually few and far between really I have loaned out my horses in the past but only ever had one that would have been suitable for a beginner. However, my jumping mare would have frightened the pants off you but had you got her in to trouble, she was more than capable of getting you out of it |

I spent the first seven-or-so years of my riding education *petrified*. When I came back to riding as an adult, I discovered I'm not scared at all. I would have taken you up on that challenge. It would have given you a good laugh, if nothing else. |

I actually prefer cross country to show jumping. There really is a buzz cross countrying but it is a more dangerous sport as they are fixed fences. I am the opposite of you. The older I have got, the less bottle I have got. As a teenager 4ft + fences didn't faze me. The last time I jumped four foot was a couple of years ago now, I was dared to be a teenager again I pointed my mare to the fence I knew she wouldn't refuse it and I shut my eyes and let her take me over it lol!!! I haven't done it since. Most I jump now is a log in the wood |

Cross-country would probably have my preference as well. I've never tried it. Well... more than the occasional log or logs in the woods then. Doesn't really count. |
