Yes Karen they can and do in alot of cases. There is also the problem of the in-house test that vets do as it can give a false possitive and is therefore not very conclusive. |

Hold on hold on so some people are told their cats are positive when their not - surely that can't be right. But just added to my list of possible new family member when the time is right a FIV cat as I assume it can't pass on to dogs? |

FIV is usually passed through blood by biting / fighting. Can also be sexual trasmitted. But generally most FIV cats are fit & well & can lead a relatively normal life. We only rehome them as indoor cats, just because it is unfair to let the cat out putting other cats in the neighbourhood at risk. The main thing to be aware of with an FIV cat is that their immunity is suppressed therefore if they get any runny eyes or sniffles they need to get medical attention asap as they can't fight infection very easily. We do not euthanase FIV cats & certainly something I wouldn't do. FeLV is a very different virus & something I have different views on. So little Polly will stay here until she either goes home, or finds a new home.  |

The in house tests are very unreliable........the test should be sent off to Glasgow for a definite diagnosis. This has happened numerous times, and sadly too many have been pts on an inhouse test even when the cat in themself is showing no health problems  |

Smudgley I'm pleased that you don't euthanise FIV's  However, in the situation the cat was in, I can't see her as posing any risk to others.......afterall, any she comes into contact with now are probably cats she was in contact before. If she is as you say sweet natured, this shouldn't be a problem.Was the test sent off or was it an inhouse one? |

Yes it's an inhouse test. I have no idea on the reliablility of it, but would guess it must be very high otherwise surely it would not be licensed? |
