Because it's very large, has three claws on it's foot, one curved like a scimitar and two like daggers and can easily disembowel a human with it's kick! And has, there are lots of recorded cases in Australia. They're related to the emu. My last issue of Smithsonian Magazine had an article about them, which gave me the idea for this question. Habitat destruction is driving them out of their forests, meaning more human encounters as they look for fruit. The female abandons the eggs, and papa bird does the rearing....
