Hmmm, no real idea. However I would hazard a total guess at sandbanks or some kind of shallow water.

It is one towards which the wind is blowing - Sailors observe a vital distinction between the windward side of a ship, from which the wind is blowing, and the lee side, towards which the vessel is being blown. Because the square-rigged ships of old could not sail within less than about sixty degrees of the direction of the wind, the unfortunate mariner who ventured too near a leeward shore might well find himself without enough sea-room to pull away from it, and would eventually come to grief on its rocks or other impervious horrors.

So yes, I take this to be the sheltered side.

I am a good sailor as they say. Grandfathers family at some point in the past were fishermen.

But - I don't like boats so don't tend to go out unless it is ferry to somewhere!

Was on ferry once in the 70's to Isle of Man and the whole ferry were sick due to the rough seas except for me and another woman who were sitting in the lounge eating manx ice cream!!
