Evening Moli, I've just been cleaning my horse's saddles and bridles  Earlier, I went to meet a black lab I am interested in using for Maddie. She is due in season at the end of the month - fingers crossed. He was lovely, a real good stamp with a nice big head and chunky bone. His pedigree is very good too and he is doing very well in the show ring - so I think I have made my mind up now...Maddie now officially has a boyfriend :-D

If he is black and maddie is chocolate, does that mean the pups will be chocolate and black?

Fran
04-06-2005, 10:10 PM
Yes Moli because he carries a chocolate gene, if he didn't there would be no chocolate pups. There's a small chance there could be a yellow, we are really hoping not as it is not desirable to breed yellow from chocolate. He carries yellow as well. We don't think Maddie carries yellow but if she does there could be a yellow pup. If she does throw a yellow we will then know she carries yellow and breeding from her in the future will be much harder finding a mate who doesn't carry yellow :?

So if you mate maddie to another chocolate there's a chanc the pups could be black and a possible yellow?

Fran

No, choc x choc cannot produce black but yellow is possible if both dogs carry the yellow gene...

Moli

So why will you use a black stud, if you want chocolate,(Sorry PK breeding is totally ailen to me)!

Fran

It is complicated Moli. I wanted to keep a black bitch out of this litter. I didn't want an all choc littter. Choc to choc matings can introduce a colour dilution, it is much better to mate choc to black.

The ideal scenario would be choc x black carrying choc but not yellow but these dogs are like gold dust, very very few good dogs in the country :?

If he is black and maddie is chocolate, does that mean the pups will be chocolate and black?

I suppose you could say pups might be dark chocolate or milk chocolate :-D :-D

I hope everything will go to plan PK...exciting days ahead!

You're right Moli.....I didn't know so much was involved either!!

Do you get pups different shades of chocolate PK?...

Mags
05-06-2005, 08:16 PM
I won't answer that one Moli :-D

Fran
05-06-2005, 08:32 PM
Do you get pups different shades of chocolate PK?...

Yes Moli, I had two pups in the last litter slightly paler. Very dark chocolate sort of Bournville colour :-D is desirable in the show ring but any shade is acceptable from quite light through to very dark- almost black. I personally prefer them slightly lighter than very dark brown.

Mags

So will we have another litter of pups to go all gaga over PK? :-D

Fran
05-06-2005, 08:39 PM
I am hoping so Mags. This will be my last litter for a while as I am giving the girls a rest. Having pups affects their coats and makes them look shabby, I really want to start showing Tikka so I need her coat in tip top condition.....

Mags

I'm amazed how you find time for breeding (let alone showing) with all your animals and two young children.....and a hubby!

Fran
05-06-2005, 08:47 PM
That's another reason why I am having a break. The children miss out on a lot whilst I have pups because the pups take so much of my time, so it will be good for them, we will be able to do more as a family. At the moment we have to plan everything around when the next litter is due  We are ready for a long family holiday rather than a few days away here and there....

Mags

Is your hubby 'into' animals as much as you are PK?

Fran
05-06-2005, 09:08 PM
He is very much into the animals, maybe not quite as enthusiastically as me. He is very good when I have pups on and helps me loads. He knows how I love animals and so accepts it as a way of life for us but he doesn't get so stressy about them as me, I worry constantly about them. Eg, when Maud and kitts went in cattery, I really fretted about them, he was forever telling me to relax and enjoy the break away and that they were in good hands and ok. But if anything had have happened to them he would have been the first one going crackers about it :? He is more level headed than me with regard to the animals, I want to keep a black bitch from Maddie's next litter, he thinks we have enough on especially as we now have Claude and Clooney. But he knows I really want to show the dogs so if there is one that really shines he wouldn't say no 8)

You've got a very understanding hubby there PK! It's nice that he'll help out with the animals too. My hubby isn't interested in animals at all :(

Hasyour hubby ever had a dog Mags?

Mags
05-06-2005, 10:09 PM
No Moli.....don't think he ever had a pet - that's why he is like that now

Fran
05-06-2005, 10:17 PM
He needs educating Mags  He needs a week at my house with my hubby and I will spend the week with you :-D

Fran
05-06-2005, 10:18 PM
He'll come back with puppies and riding a horse!!!

Mags
05-06-2005, 10:21 PM
 .....if only!!

Moli
05-06-2005, 10:25 PM
I often think it's sad, people who have never had a pet really do ot know what they are missing, but we are all different I suppose...

Fran
05-06-2005, 10:27 PM
I think it is the same with children Moli. People who are adamant they never want children, would really see what they were missing if they had their own...

Mags
05-06-2005, 10:28 PM
I suppose his family weren't 'animal' people so he doesn't know any different. He can't understand why I fuss over Cassie

Moli
05-06-2005, 10:37 PM
My hubby is a bit the same, he cannot understand how I can be so emotional over an animal, but I am very emotional Im afraid...

Mags
05-06-2005, 10:39 PM
.......snap
I bet PK is laughing at us now!!

Moli
05-06-2005, 10:41 PM
Thats it Mags..We must be sisters....

Mags
05-06-2005, 10:42 PM
   ......you never know!!!

Moli
05-06-2005, 10:43 PM
PK,I think is the sensible one among us....

Fran
05-06-2005, 10:43 PM
 You both need to send your hubby's here for a week :-D

Mags
05-06-2005, 10:46 PM
You don't know what you'd be letting yourself in for PK!!

Moli
05-06-2005, 10:46 PM
If I thought you mean't that PK, he would be on the first plane tomorrow....

Mags
05-06-2005, 10:47 PM
Ooooo.......you want to get rid of him quick Moli!!

Fran
05-06-2005, 10:49 PM
I think you would be double booking him Moli as he is flying off already tomorrow isn't he?

Mags
05-06-2005, 10:51 PM
........and that's further away too!
What time is he off Moli?

Moli
05-06-2005, 10:54 PM
I am taking him to the airport for 2pm..Don't tell him, but I do miss him when he is away....I moan about him, but he really is my soul mate, be lost without him...just not all the time..
