Ah, Angie, hope you're better!

angieh
23-09-2009, 08:07 PM
I have to confess that the rum and coke is having a bit of a numbing effect. Nice though. Sorry, it makes me a bit talkative!

dandysmom
23-09-2009, 08:10 PM
Talk away! Is Kizzy stlil sitting nest to you?

Q1 - On which river are the Victoria Falls?

yola
23-09-2009, 08:14 PM
I'm relishing an evening on my own!! Waiting for dinner to cool as I can't eat anything hot.

dandysmom
23-09-2009, 08:14 PM
Who's chasing whom?

angieh
23-09-2009, 08:15 PM
Mainly Pip chasing Kizzy I'm afraid. But it's so good for her weight loss!!!

River Nile? Sorry not sure White or Blue.

I've just remembered I've got a bar of dark choc in the kitchen - just going to get it.

dandysmom
23-09-2009, 08:16 PM
Victoria Falls ....Africa ....the Zambesi?

yola
23-09-2009, 08:16 PM
That'd be the Zambezi . . . my ex-husband called me once whilst standing inside/behind the actual falls (or so he says . . . )

angieh
23-09-2009, 08:18 PM
Yes, I just thought of the Zambesi ............. darn, it's cooking chocolate, but it's better than nothing!

angieh
23-09-2009, 08:20 PM
Kizzy is now sitting next to me!!!

calismum
23-09-2009, 08:20 PM
Zambesi is corect.

angieh
23-09-2009, 08:20 PM

dandysmom
23-09-2009, 08:21 PM
Wild guess....ash?

yola
23-09-2009, 08:21 PM
I'd say willow. "The sound of leather on willow . . . "

dandysmom
23-09-2009, 08:22 PM
Oddly enough there was a piece in the paper about cricket getting popular here because of so many immigrants from cricket-playing countries.

calismum
23-09-2009, 08:23 PM
Willow was corect

Q3 - What is the largest planet in our solar system?

23-09-2009, 08:26 PM
Sorry, got carried away there ....... Jupiter.

calismum
23-09-2009, 08:28 PM
Yes, Jupiter is correct.

Don't remember the cricket scene angieh - but I remember the wrestling one!!!!

calismum
23-09-2009, 08:28 PM
Q4 - What is the plant hamamelis commonly known as?

angieh
23-09-2009, 08:29 PM

I know this one ............ it's Witch Hazel and I am definitely going to plant one this autumn!

yola
23-09-2009, 08:29 PM
I have read the book The Go-Between and it did have a cricket match in it (reaches into dark recesses of memory) but didn't see the film.

Was only watching Ollie Reed in 'The System' (little known early Michael Winner film) and said we ought to get Women in Love just for that wonderfully ahem . . . sexy scene :D

calismum
23-09-2009, 08:30 PM
I do think Eileen ought to watch more films!!!

Yes, I do enjoy a good film.

yola
23-09-2009, 08:30 PM
No idea, but will go with Angie's witch hazel . . .

dandysmom
23-09-2009, 08:32 PM
I remember this poem which to me is so evocative of England.....

For the field is full of shades as I near the shadowy coast
And I look thru my tears at the soundless clapping hosts
And a ghostly batter (something) to the bowling of a ghost
As the run stealers flicker to and fro
Oh my Hornby and my Barlow long ago ....

dandysmom
23-09-2009, 08:33 PM
Too busy typing to say witch hazel...duh!

angieh
23-09-2009, 08:34 PM
What's that from Eileen????

yola
23-09-2009, 08:34 PM
I love european cinema, but especially both British and Italian cinema from the 50s ad 60s; they are such snap shots of a fast-changing society gone forever.

yola
23-09-2009, 08:35 PM
That's a lovely extract Eileen. Is sounds familiar - not so much the words but the rythm of the words . . .

angieh
23-09-2009, 08:35 PM
Yes, I agree Yola - I have seen a few Italian films from that era. Wonderfully evocative.

dandysmom
23-09-2009, 08:36 PM
Don't remember, Angie, will look it up after the game. I reversed lines two and three...

calismum

"At Lord's" by Francis Thompson

It is little I repair to the matches of the Southron folk,
Though my own red roses there may blow;
It is little I repair to the matches of the Southron folk,
Though the red roses crest the caps, I know.
For the field is full of shades as I near a shadowy coast,
And a ghostly batsman plays to the bowling of a ghost,
And I look through my tears on a soundless-clapping host
As the run-stealers flicker to and fro,
To and fro:
Oh my Hornby and my Barlow long ago!

Thanks, CM! For some odd reason I've always loved that (even if slightly misquoted!)

yola
23-09-2009, 08:38 PM
Beautiful. Yes - it describes England perfectly. Or rather the idyll of a past England - the reality is somewhat broader in terms of cultural influence now.

calismum
23-09-2009, 08:39 PM
Witch Hazel it was.

q5 If a dish is 'en papillote' it is cooked or served how?

angieh
23-09-2009, 08:40 PM

calismum

Beautiful. Yes - it describes England perfectly. Or rather the idyll of a past England - the reality is somewhat broader in terms of cultural influence now.

It is a lovely poem, close your eyes and you can almost be there.

yola
23-09-2009, 08:40 PM
Wrapped in a paper parcel.

dandysmom
23-09-2009, 08:40 PM
In paper........

angieh
23-09-2009, 08:41 PM
Is it sort of cooked enveloped in something and basically steamed?

dandysmom
23-09-2009, 08:42 PM
That poem and pictures of your woods full of bluebells really conjure up England to me .... yes, as it was.

yola
23-09-2009, 08:43 PM
Don't you have bluebells in the US Eileen? I would have thought they were fairly ubiquitous?

calismum
23-09-2009, 08:44 PM
In paper. You are all very smart tonight! Must make them a bit more challenging.

Q6 - What is the first name of my favourite aunt?

or

Q6 - Who is the greek god of music?

angieh
23-09-2009, 08:45 PM

calismum
23-09-2009, 08:47 PM
Is the answer the same, CM??

Terpsichore???????????? Don't believe you have an aunt of that name!!!!

dandysmom
23-09-2009, 08:48 PM
Should remember this one, but don't ...Dionysus?

yola
23-09-2009, 08:48 PM
Why does Pheobe ring a bell from classical studies - again, deep distant past

dandysmom
23-09-2009, 08:51 PM
Don't you have bluebells in the US Eileen? I would have thought they were fairly ubiquitous?

Yes, but not acres and of acres of them wild in the woods....I was awed when I saw pics here several years back of them!

angieh
23-09-2009, 08:51 PM
I think it might have been Apollo himself ........... I was perhaps thinking of the Muses before .............

As for your aunt, CM - is it Auntie Delphine?

calismum
23-09-2009, 08:52 PM
No - all wrong. Much more 'well known'
but FYI
Terpsichore is the Muse of dancing and the dramatic chorus, and later of lyric poetry.

Dionysus or Dionysos is the god of wine, the inspirer of ritual madness and ecstasy.

Phoebe, was one of the original Titans, who were one set of sons and daughters of Uranus and Gaia. She was traditionally associated with the moon.

Would you like to guess again?

dandysmom
23-09-2009, 08:54 PM
Hint? ...........

yola
23-09-2009, 08:54 PM
Sorry, not a clue then

angieh
23-09-2009, 08:55 PM
I'm sticking with Apollo.

calismum
23-09-2009, 08:55 PM
Well - A big hint, I have one correct answer!!! :)

dandysmom
23-09-2009, 08:56 PM

calismum
23-09-2009, 09:01 PM
Apollo it was - I didn't know that!

angieh
23-09-2009, 09:02 PM
lanolin ................... ?

yola
23-09-2009, 09:04 PM
Ah, now this I remember from NCT classes and the fact you were meant to use it - or at least it was a component part of what you used - for sore or cracked boobies when breastfeeding!!!

Lanolin??

Or at least I think so . . .

angieh
23-09-2009, 09:05 PM
wonder if it works on dermatitis????

calismum
23-09-2009, 09:06 PM
Yep, Lanolin.

When we shear the sheep in the summer I usually help to roll the fleeces. My hands are sooooo soft at the end of the day. (can imagine why it would be good for sore boobies)!!

yola
23-09-2009, 09:07 PM
wonder if it works on dermatitis????

That I don't know. I used the cream on the odd bits of eczema I had and it did ease the itching and soreness.

angieh
23-09-2009, 09:08 PM
I might give it a go. I have a patch of dermatitis that won't clear up .........

calismum
23-09-2009, 09:09 PM
wonder if it works on dermatitis????

My friends daughter uses it for her dermatitis. But she can only use natural lanolin - she is allergic to some lanolin based products as they have other ingredients.

angieh
23-09-2009, 09:10 PM
Thanks for that CM - do you know the brand she uses?

calismum
23-09-2009, 09:11 PM

23-09-2009, 09:12 PM

angieh
23-09-2009, 09:13 PM
Not offhand but I can call her and ask if you are interested?

Yes please. I have used Christie's in years gone by ........ I'd forgotten about lanolin completely when trying to think about what might help. I've had the usual cortisone cream from the quack!

dandysmom
23-09-2009, 09:14 PM
Panopticon...... something to so with sight or seeing....slides?

calismum
23-09-2009, 09:15 PM
