We have an entire pigeon family-Mr and Mrs fatty and their children

Does Cleo bother them?

angieh
24-06-2009, 08:28 PM
Yes, DM and you all are right. I saw that "passerine" comes from the Latin for sparrow! Full definition is:

"Of or relating to birds of the order Passeriformes, which includes perching birds and songbirds such as the jays, blackbirds, finches, warblers, and sparrows."

Q4. In “The Owl and the Pussycat” by Edward Lear are the words “They dined on mince and slices of quince Which they ate with a runcible spoon.” What is a “runcible spoon”?

dandysmom
24-06-2009, 08:30 PM
It's actually a sort of funny fork with curved prongs! I remember looking that up once when it came up in a crossword!

Stephan
24-06-2009, 08:30 PM
It`s a posh one for eating cake-half fork-but I`m A leftie-so gets it wrong

calismum
24-06-2009, 08:31 PM
it is a sort of cross between a fork/knife and spoon. It has prongs and a sharp cutting edge.

Stephan
24-06-2009, 08:32 PM
Does Cleo bother them?

More like she runs for a cuddle if they flap around

angieh
24-06-2009, 08:36 PM
Yes, you are all right again! I'm not sure whether it's certain as my answer did say "probable".

"The probable definition of this term is that a runcible spoon is a small fork with three prongs, one having a sharp edge, and curved like a spoon. This spoon is used to eat pickles, etc."

Q5. Which is the only "big cat" that can purr?

Q. 6 What is a Rat King?

[this answer may not suit squeamish people!]

Stephan
24-06-2009, 08:51 PM
A tail tangle

calismum
24-06-2009, 08:53 PM
It is a large number of rats which get joined together when their tails all stick due to dirt or pooh or rotton food etc.

There is a mummy of one in a museum somewhere I believe.

Yuk

dandysmom
24-06-2009, 08:54 PM
Haven't a clue........ (not squeamish, by the way!)

angieh
24-06-2009, 08:57 PM
Steph and CM are right. I'll post my answer, but CM's reply has got the gist of it anyway. Not absolutely sure that it's not a fable. There seem to be quite a few photos!

"Rat kings are phenomena said to arise when a number of rats become intertwined at their tails, which become stuck together with blood, dirt, ice, excrement or simply knotted. The animals reputedly grow together while joined at the tails."

As you say, YUK - how the poor things don't go mad I don't know.

Q7. What is a Tarte Tatin?

[this answer may not suit people who are hungry or on diets!]

Stephan
24-06-2009, 08:58 PM
Apple on a short crust pastry???

calismum
24-06-2009, 08:59 PM
Obviously some scrummy yummy pudding - but other than that, I haven't a clue.

dandysmom
24-06-2009, 08:59 PM
Have no idea, but if it's one of those yummy things you and OH bake, I want some!

angieh
24-06-2009, 09:00 PM
I need a particular phrase to say OK to this answer!

calismum
24-06-2009, 09:01 PM
A tart of some type. (stating the obvious!!!)

angieh
24-06-2009, 09:02 PM
"Tarte Tatin is an upside-down apple tart in which the apples are caramelised in butter and sugar before the tart is baked."

Sounds de-lish, doesn't it? Invented in France d'accord!

Q8 How many muscles does a cat have in each ear?

[we may have had this Q before!]

Stephan
24-06-2009, 09:02 PM
My hands can be cold if I`m rolling you??

Stephan
24-06-2009, 09:04 PM
32..........................................

calismum
24-06-2009, 09:04 PM
Well, their ears are extremely mobile so I guess 20+

dandysmom
24-06-2009, 09:04 PM
We did and I can't remember the answer! It was some very large number I think, like 10 .??????

calismum

“Do you believe in rock ‘n roll,

calismum
24-06-2009, 09:07 PM
American Pie?

Stephan
24-06-2009, 09:08 PM
Remember-a half baked tart is no better than it should be

dandysmom
24-06-2009, 09:08 PM
American Pie

Stephan
24-06-2009, 09:08 PM
American Pie

angieh
24-06-2009, 09:11 PM

dandysmom
24-06-2009, 09:12 PM

calismum

Don Mc Lean-but James Beard writes some nice recipes-

I learned to bake bread from his Beard on Bread .......:D

angieh
24-06-2009, 09:19 PM
Don McLean is correct.

I have to tell you there is a tie tonight between DM and Steph with 17 points and CM has 16, so a very close competition.

So tie break Q for DM and Steph only:

What occurs once in a minute, twice in a week and once in a year?

Stephan
24-06-2009, 09:20 PM
I like his stuff

I hope Steph knows, because I have no idea!

calismum
24-06-2009, 09:21 PM
An aside - have any of you made tortillas?

No - but they're supposed to be quite easy??

angieh
24-06-2009, 09:23 PM
Yes Steph is right - the letter "e" is the answer.

Well done Steph - are you OK for next week???

dandysmom
24-06-2009, 09:24 PM
Not I. Not particularly fond of Tex-Mex food.

angieh
24-06-2009, 09:24 PM
Yes-I even have a tortilla press

No - but they're supposed to be quite easy??

Yes, I found a recipe this afternoon and it sounds very easy apart from the rolling out, which is solved if you have a tortilla press ............... !

Can you freeze the dough Steph?

Stephan
24-06-2009, 09:24 PM
Yes-and thanks for a great quizz

calismum
24-06-2009, 09:25 PM
Well done Steph. Thanks for great questions angieh, once again learned some new things.

dandysmom
24-06-2009, 09:25 PM
Oh Angie, seems so obvious once you see the answer!

Thanks for a great quiz, some excellent qs as usual!

Congrats Steph!

Stephan
24-06-2009, 09:26 PM
Can you freeze the dough Steph?

I wouldn`t-its basically corn flour-make them fresh

angieh
24-06-2009, 09:26 PM
Not I. Not particularly fond of Tex-Mex food.

You can have soft dough tortillas which make excellent low calorie wraps for non Tex-Mex fillings, like PoshPuss's chicken and salad wraps, which is what got me thinking about it in the first place!

Stephan
24-06-2009, 09:28 PM
And -I had seen that Q before

angieh
24-06-2009, 09:29 PM
And -I had seen that Q before

More than likely .................. !

So, are you going to make some? I love Peking duck when you wrap the meat in the little pancakes with the sauce, but generally think wraps are sort of messy....stuff falls out when you're trying to eat! (OK, I'm picky!)

angieh
24-06-2009, 10:05 PM
I may well try - I think there's a knack of folding the wraps so that stuff doesn't fall out - the ones I used to buy for lunch from a well-known store here never used to fall apart! I agree about the crispy duck - which is not the slimmer's option though unfortunately!!!
