We have two 11 week old kittens we got from a rehoming organisation. My brother-in-law has two British Shorthairs & seems to think ours may be pedigree or pedigree cross. He explained their markings to a worker at his local cattery & she told him they could be a breed called Black Smoke. I havent been able to find anything on this breed. The kittens are black with a chocolatey brown underneath. They also have striped markings that have become more visible in the last 3 weeks. I have some photos that I can show & will try to get some close up shots (when they keep still for a second!).
Any feedback would be great.

Andy, it's not a breed I've heard of, but then I'm not a breeder so not familiar with many of the newer breeds.

Can you post some pictures? That may help with identification. Other than that, we have some knowledgable breeders and showers here who I'm sure will be along soon.

Black smoke refers usually to the colouring.....

Yes, what Moli said, its a colour not a breed. Several breeds including the BSH has this colour variation. Post the pics if you can.

I'm not a breeder nor really up on coloration, but my breeder friends told me a black smoke had black tipped fur that was white underneath, not brown..... do post some pics!

Sorry the photos don't show the markings clearly. This one is Marmite. Coco has more defined markings.

Thank you all for the quick replies.

I can't comment on the colouring; they look browny-black to me

I must admit they are lovely. I was never really a 'cat-person' but my Missus managed to talk me into it. As women do!!!;) They had their 1st set of injections yesterday & have slept most of today.

Our kids love them too.

aww they are little darlings! They look mostly black with a hint of tabby markings - will be interesting to see if that develops any further.

Ah thanks for that. When I manage to photo the other one, hopefully the markings will show up better. Coco has stripes from her head down her neck.

Beautiful kittens.

I would say they are moggy kittens. Many have faint tabby markings which often clear as they get older. The British shorthair is a much heavier cat.

I have to agree with Dawn on this one. They are too slim built and don't have the profile for the British Shorthair.
There can be different shades of black they don't look much like a smoke to me to be honest with you.
They are gorgeous little things though. Hope they bring you lots of pleasure.

Black smoke is a colour as everyone as said :D

Sorry but looking at your pics then cats are just normal black with unsound coats - unsound means they fade at the root.

Lovely and shiny and mega cute though but not at all like a BSH should be ;)

Have attached piccies of a Black Smoke Selkirk Rex - you can see the silver showing through and a Black BSH mature neuter for comparison :D

What an interesting expression "unsound coats"! Never heard that before; assume it applies particularly to show cats, but to moggies as well. I love all the new things I learn on Catsey!

Blacks are probably the latest to get their proper black coat, this is definitely the case in Persians/Exotics. Many Black kittens have a black/grey coat to start with many with the faint tabby markings which are known as ghost markings. Blacks can also appear chocolatey. The Black Smoke is a totally different colour and can never be mistaken for a black.
They are beautiful kittens but I would say they are pure bred moggies.

Your kittens are very cute! One is called Coco, is that right - and what's the other one called??? They are the colour of dark chocolate - my favourite!

used in the show ring of course but for example my gorgeous shiny black moggie when you part her coat has very grey roots to the hair shaft....

many pedigrees breeders particularly in the BSH work hard to get the coats of their cats the same colour to the root - the black neuter above has a totally sound coat - jet black to the roots ;)

Although they are called Blacks there is no such thing as a jet black cat they are in fact extremely dark brown that give the impression of black. Apparently it is genetically impossible to have a jet black cat. If you look at the black neuter in Soupie's post you can clearly see dark brown on the legs ;) .
