What makes a cat a tortoiseshell?

Hi all

As you know i have my hands full with 5 gorgeous kitties but i am still having trouble sexing them.

Its the tabbies i need to sex and they each have a little red in them, does that make them tortie tabbies?

Is it the red that makes a tortie?

Which would make them all girls?????

Jules, here's a helpful link that will explain torties, The genetic bit is slightly complicated but all in all it's very informative. It's hard to tell from the pic, but the kits seem to have tabby markings, so it's possible they may be torbies: tabby markings on face, chest, legs, tail, but a tortie coat. And yes, tortie males are very rare and almost 100% sterile. Whatever, they're darling little ones; more pics, please!!

They only seem to have a bit of red on their faces, the rest of the body is tabby, will try and get some close up pics.
