We had a collar for Patch before (which has now dissapeared somewhere in our house!) but we had lots of trouble making him wear it. He used to try and get his bottom jaw underneath it and many times it got stuck and he was choking, not a nice sight or sound!!

but he goes outside regularly and we really want him to wear a collar so does anyone have any suggestions? what type of collars are good? would be willing to buy a collar off the internet if it's funky and safe ;)

Jane, any pet shop should have a stack of them. I would suggest one that has a safty trigger that if the cat gets caught in something like a tree it opens.

The one we had before (and is probably still laying around somewhere) had a bit of elastic on it incase he got stuck, but is that enough? I've seen some breakaway ones on the internet but can't seem to find any in pet shops?

Any tips on how to get him to wear it?? Silly thing, but don't want him to get it stuck on his jaw whilst we're all sleeping and him like die or something.

ooh, I like http://www.kittycollars.co.uk what do you think of them?? Might get one :D

OOhh I like them too. I would say a getting a jaw caught would warrant a snap open.

These collars are lovely, I can recommend them as Cassie has one....and they have the safety catch on them.

The company is owned by one of our members........

Will have a look there Mags, thank you.

The only thing is we're worried about him getting his jaw caught again....any tips? Should we maybe put it on in the day whilst he's in the house at first and not leave it on at night incase it happens until we're confident or will that not work? Any tips are great.

I would get him used to wearing it in the house first before you let him wear it out doors.

The safety catch collar snaps undone when any 'pressure' is put on the collar....... if the collar caught on a branch of a tree for instance, once the cat pulls away the collar would immediately come apart. They are definately a lot safer than the elastic collars as there would be no way for him to get it over his jaw again (no elastic!).

No way for him to get it over his jaw?? Are you pretty sure of that? If there is almost on chance I think we will DEFINATELY get one, the only thing worrying us is it this happens again.

I'm loving these two;

Do you think they're boyish enough for our little guy? ;)

Here is a pic of Cassie's collar...........you can see the snap clasp better .....also you can see there is no elastic anywhere so he would be unable to stretch it onto his jaw.......

Well we were planning on ordering one from the tinternet but this morning we were in Pets at Home and they had ones with the breakaway thingy so we bought one, dad put it on him this evening...he's a bit peeved off about it but it's still on and he hasn't got his jaw under it :D

Have some pics and a video, will upload them all soon.

I buy the snap/release ones which has "If found call .........." printed on them. I buy them from the first link you posted;)
I would always avoid the ones with elastic and buckles, have seen the damage that has been caused to cats with those, some ending up having amputations because they have become trapped with the collars being snagged on something and the poor cat has so desperately tried to get free and ended up with terrible injuries.

Well that lasted long...he went out at about 7:45 this morning, came back various times, then about 9:40 he came in and the collar is gone, great.

Sorry the collar didn't last long but obviously he caught it on something and the safety catch did its job. If it had been a buckle and elastic collar, he may have got himself trapped somewhere and injured himself trying to get free!

I would sooner lose a collar than have a cat injured in some way ;)

Yep that's true atleast it did it's job and he's not stuck somewhere being strangled or something. It's just annoying haha :P

Do you think we should buy another?

I would buy a couple more, I doubt he will lose the second one so quickly, sometimes ours lose theirs and occasionally we or the neighbours find them.

Did you remove the bell? Some cats absolutely hate the bell and will try and remove every collar they have to get rid of the sound! I have found speaking to quite a few folk about it that it seems to help by removing the bell :D

Jane

Yep we did remove the bell before putting it on his so it wouldn't drive him crazy ;)

my 2 have the elasticated type collars. but today reggie came in,he was all upset crying, he had got a stick caught in the elasticated bit of the collar and couldnt get it out, luckily OH rescued reggie, and with lots of strokes from mummy he was a happy fella again.but just so glad we was about. what if we had gone out for the day??? cant bear to think about it. what i might do is take it off when we are due to go out for the day, n risk them getting ticks n fleas and catching birdies. what am i sposed to do??? hard one that.

Jane

The elasticated collars can be very dangerous, the ones which are just a strip of a fabric with a breakway clasp are much safer. Have a look at some of the links through this thread ;)

the elasticated collars are so bad for cats - my own cats have been injured by them which is why I will never put one of those types of collars on them again.

If you go to your local pet store you will be able to find cat collars that have the break away buckle these are the safest you can buy (I have noticed some that have the break away buckle and elastic - crazy they are no good!)

To protect your cats from fleas and ticks the best thing you can do is use a spot on treatment :D

Digging up old threads ftw... (but since this one was recently linked.)

Kittycat Boutique has closed "for the time being". :-(

I'll have to find somewhere else to keep mr. can't-keep-a-collar-for-more-than-a-week dressed to the nine(live)s. We had just about come to the end of the collars we had.

I'm trying... but his nibs is too busy socialising, birdcatching and jowling for treats from the top of the freezer to stand photography. ^^

He *is* working on a new exercise routine, though. Step Catrobics, I think.

i used to put a collar on Elvis...........he 'lost' about 15 of them! hed go out with it........come back with nothing on!

once i wrote a note & put it in the collar incase he was wandering to someone else............he came back with no note & no collar!

dont bother now everyone knows him and knows where he lives, think i might put on on Taylor when he goes out have too see how it goes :)

Since Rover has a "wild" colour, I prefer to replace the collars. If something happens to him, a kindly passer-by may realise that he's a pet and take him to a vet, and the vet may realise that it's worth looking for a chip.

He'll have shrugged off the collar five minutes before, but you never know. :-)
