DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN...?

It took five minutes for the TV warm up?

Nearly everyone's Mum was at home when the kids got home from school?

Nobody owned a purebred dog?

When a a shilling was a decent allowance?

You'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny?

Your Mom wore stockings that came in two pieces?

All your male teachers wore ties and female teachers had
their hair done every day and wore high heels?

You got your windshield cleaned, oil checked, and petrol pumped,
without asking, all for free, every time?
And you didn't pay for air?

Cereals had free toys hidden inside the box?

It was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner
at a real restaurant with your parents?

They threatened to keep kids back a year if they failed. . .and they did?

When a 57 Holden was everyone's dream car
No one ever asked where the car keys were
because they were always in the car,
in the ignition, and the doors were never locked?

Lying on your back in the grass with your friends
and saying things like, "That cloud looks like a "

and playing footy with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game?

Stuff from the shop came without safety caps and hermetic seals
because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger?

And with all our progress, don't you just wish, just once,
you could slip back in time and savour the slower pace,
and share it with the children of today

I love reading things like that - but it makes me sad that society is the way it is now. I often wish my kids could go back in time 20 years & see what my chilhood was all about:cool:

*sigh* Yes - to most of those, but I don't know what a 57 Holden is/was.

I do remember b/w tellies and one that had only 2 buttons on top of the set; tuning and volume. The buttons were under a flap the you pressed and when if flipped up the TV came on . . . slowly :-D it had little splayed out, screw-in spindly legs like so much else 50s furniture.

I can remember not having a fridge, we had a larder, you put your milk on the windowcill at night, doors were never locked. We went out in the morning to play and came back when it was getting dark. We didnt have mobile's we didnt need them. We played on rope swings over the burn, went out on our "big" brothers bikes that they had out grown but painted another colour and no one laughed.
God this had made me realised how much time has changes and most certainly not for the better.
TV it was black and white and only really posh people had phones, some even shared the line!

Good grief this is an old thread! Not seen this one before! I remember when........
we lived in the tenamant blocks in Glasgow, and we played in the middens after school (the old stone bin shelters to those not in the know, lol), they were our dens, our gyms and our hidey holes! We shouted up to our mums to fling us a piece out if we were hungry. We played with scooshie bottles in the summer (empty washing up liquid bottles filled with water), we used the putty from newly fitted windows in the school as plasticine! We stayed out all day on our bikes, ran riot round the city streets, but never got up to anything bad. We gave up our seats on the bus to old ladies. Us girls played at the entrance to the 'close' with our dolls. We played marbles on the stanks!!(drain covers). Oh I could go on all day, what stifled lives our children lead!

Mags

................ and cats were fed on scraps from the table instead of tins of cat food!

This really does bring it all back eh?

We jumped the burn or the stank (river or ditch) mostly missed it.
and that was "bad" to come home covered in mud!
We camped out in the back garden with palls in the summer.
We had a field day just being kids.

My 5 year old wanted to know how babies got in your tummy yesterday! Shows you how things have changed.
